New York Revision Rhinoplasty Specialist

REVISION RHINOPLASTY
Revision rhinoplasty, or secondary rhinoplasty, is considered one of the most challenging subjects in the field of facial plastic surgery.  Many patients considering revision rhinoplasty come to us already having gone through many emotional challenges associated with previous surgery(s).  In addition, prior surgery(s) alter normal nasal anatomy and function of the nose.  Dr. Kwak understands these challenges, and has built a practice correcting prior surgeries.

Your Consultation
When you first meet with Dr. Kwak, use this meeting to freely discuss with Dr. Kwak changes you are seeking.  In addition, Dr. Kwak wants you to use this meeting as a chance to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have about nasal surgery.  If possible bringing a copy of your prior operative records will help Dr. Kwak in his assessment of your nose.

Dr. Kwak will examine the inside and outside of you nose.  In addition he may do nasal endoscopy during this consultation (especially if you may have a septal perforation).  To help communicate your desired changes with realistic surgical goals, Dr. Kwak and yourself will review a computerized image of your face during this consultation to allow you to see anticipated the goals for your surgery.

The Surgery
Dr. Kwak customizes each surgery based on the specific changes that are required for each individual.  Because normal anatomy has been altered and scar tissue was formed from the prior surgery(s), revision surgery often require longer operating time and may also require use of various grafts or implants.

Surgeries are performed in an accredited ambulatory surgery center or at Saint Vincent's Hospital or The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.  Nasal surgeries are performed under general anesthesia, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

After nasal surgery, your nose will feel stuffy, and you will have mucous drainage, which initially contains some blood, seeping through the dressing.  If the nasal bones were repositioned during surgery, you may have some bruising and/or swelling around your eyes.

Overnight, a small amount of packing is often placed in the nose to help prevent bleeding, hold the turbinate mucosa in the correct position, and facilitate healing.  This is removed the next morning.

Patient's typically state that the pain is mild in nature and "feels like a deep bruise."  Dr. Kwak will prescribe appropriate pain medication to help you recover.
