Rhinoplasty Can Restore Self-Confidence

Rhinoplasty nyYour nose dominates your face. You may have gorgeous, long-lashed eyes or sexy, pouty lips; but if you have a large nose, few people will notice. The difficulty people have seeing the person behind an over-sized nose was taken to extreme and comedic effect in the 1987 hit film Roxanne in which comedian Steve Martin plays a modern-day Cyrano de Bergerac. Like the 17th century French nobleman with the famously large nose, Martin’s character, fire chief C.D. Bales, has a profile of monumental proportions and an equally impressive sensitivity about the size of his nose. In the movie, C.D. makes public light of his big nose in one famous scene coming up with 20 jokes about his big nose; but in private he aches to have a small, normal-looking nose.

Naturally, Roxanne being a Hollywood creation, personality wins over looks and the guy gets the girl; but real life isn’t usually that kind. People who look at themselves in the mirror and can’t get past their nose often feel their nose is holding them back. They constantly play the “if only” game. If only my nose were smaller, I’d be attractive or handsome. If only my nose were normal size, I’d never sit home alone on Saturday night. If only my nose were like everyone else’s, I’d get that promotion.

People who are embarrassed by the size of the nose are held back not just by society’s preference for beauty but by their own lack of confidence. All those “if onlys” chip away at their self-esteem, turning their unfortunate birthright into an even bigger stumbling block. Fortunately, there is a solution. Performed by a board-certified New York facial plastic surgeon, Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” can improve the size and shape of your nose and make you smile with pleasure when you look in the mirror.

Roxanne is a great example. Not only society, but kids in high school can be cruel about how others look. A lot of younger people are considering rhinoplasty today because of this. It's okay once they reach physical maturity. Probably the best time is early in the summer after graduating from high school but before beginning college or a career. This gives a few months to heal and it won't be awkward explaining to people that may notice the change in appearance. It's also a great time to feel good about the new look.
